Welcome to the 18th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 115 yeas ago.

In today’s installment, we have Part II of Chapter 8, “Où MM. Firmin Richard et Armand Moncharmin ont l’audace de faire représenter « Faust » dans une salle « maudite » et de l’effroyable événement qui en résulta” (“Where MM. Firmin Richard and Armand Moncharmin Have the Audacity to Have ‘Faust’ Performed in a ‘Cursed’ House and the Horrifying Event Which Thereby Ensued”).

This section was first printed on Thursday, 21 October, 1909.

For anyone following along in David Coward's translation of the First Edition of Phantom of the Opera (either in paperback, or Kindle, or from another vendor -- the ISBN-13 is: 978-0199694570), the text starts in Chapter 8 at Erik's note to Carlotta, "If you appear tonight, be warned that something very unpleasant will happen when you open your mouth... and it will be a fate worse than death," and goes to Richard's line in Chapter 8, "'The Phantom's late,' said Firmin Richard."

There are some differences between the Gaulois text and the First Edition (highlighted in red above). In this section, these include:

1) In the Gaulois, the following text (highlighted in red above) was included after Leroux's description of the letter that Carlotta received (this sentence was cut from the First Edition):

* NOTE: "Sombres forêts" ("Dark Forests"), from Rossini's opera "William Tell," should actually be "Sombre forêt" ("Dark Forest"). This typo originated in Leroux's source for this quote, Le Nouvel Opéra: Monument - Artistes (see #4 below).

4) The section of the Gaulois highlighted in blue above is taken from Le Nouvel Opéra: Monument - Artistes by X.Y.Z. (i.e. Anonymous). Leroux copied his sentences from this source, and then edited and rearranged them to fit his story. This description of Carlotta comes from the biography of operatic soprano Gabrielle Krauss. The sentences highlighted in blue in this image are what Leroux copied from this source (Leroux also copied other parts from this biography of Krauss in later sections of this chapter):

5) In the Gaulois, the following text (highlighted in red, within the blue section above) was included after Leroux's description of Rossini's compliment of La Krauss (it was cut from the First Edition).

Translation:

There is indeed in all the arts, and in the art of singing in particular, a certain material exterior, which relates more to the senses than to the soul. It is this exterior which momentarily enthralls the ignorant masses, but which is also the least glorious and the least certain to shine. Voices which are only voices tire quickly, and they have good reason not to last, for they also quickly tire the listener which they were earlier able to astonish. I am not the only one to have realized this, but everyone agrees that to the voices which have both soul and style belongs lasting success.*

* NOTE: Leroux was well known to “borrow” (i.e., plagiarize) from other works. In my translation of “The Magic Envelope” (linked here), I found that Leroux lifted a sentence directly from the French translation of Lorenzo da Ponte’s Memoirs. Leroux was an omnivorous reader, and might have copied phrases from books that he was currently reading.

In his chapter “The Magic Violin,” Leroux also lifted several poems from Le roi Fialar, which was a collection of Scandinavian poetry, translated into French prose by Hippolyte Valmore in 1879. (See my copy here.) Included in this volume was a French translation of “Den første sorg,” or “The First Sorrow,” a poem written in 1836 by the Norwegian poet, Andreas Munch. This poem started out, “Den lille Lotte tenkte på alt og ingenting,” or “Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing.” Sound familiar? @operafantomet​ was the first to discover this connection between Little Lotte and “Den første sorg,” which you can read more about here.

6) In the Gaulois, the following text was included right before Carlotta saw the hearse outside her window (it was cut from the First Edition):

"Do you take me for Poligny?" laughed the audacious Richard.

"Speaking of Poligny ... you know, I believe I saw him over there, in the first tier box opposite us."

"Well, I never!"

They searched for Poligny's face, but they didn't find it. However, in a first tier box facing them, next to the one in which Moncharmin believed to have seen Poligny, they saw a figure which drew the attention of the entire house. As they stood to take a stroll of the stage, since the first entr'acte would be longer than usual because of the new sets that the new direction had installed, some of their friends entered their box and informed them that the figure on which the entire house had fixed its gaze was the new ambassador of Persia, whom no one had met yet. And they added that the public's curiosity was less excited by the presence of this individual than by that of another figure, sitting in the stalls, who was known to the Parisian high society, and who Moncharmin and Richard couldn't help but notice: the Persian.* In short, people were looking to see if the ambassador of Persia was looking at the Persian.

Have you learned any new fun facts about cars recently?

Of course!!!

Just today:

I learned that the Golf Country (wicked factory off road version of the Mk2 Golf) was lifted over 4 inches for a total of around 7 inches of ground clearance!

I learned the absolutely mental Cobalt SS was essentially a parts bin special -they had a powerful 4 cylinder from the Saturn Ion Red Line and figured they'd put it in the less weird Cobalt and people would care, which they did- and that its epoch-making 260hp powertrain was only a later upgrade -again, borrowed from another car, the Pontiac Solstice GXP- once the original engine no longer met emission requirements. And that it had a sedan version!!!

And, while writing this post, I looked for details on how this lapped the King-Daddy, longest and most gruelling monster of all circuits that is the Nürburgring faster than the all-wheel-drive six-figure Japanese demigod that is the Skyline GT-R, and found out about the popular misconception that this refers to the R34 Nissan Skyline (right), to date the most coveted and sought after, whereas it actually refers to the R32 (left), a prior version -though not much less groundbreaking in its own time- and that the nonetheless staggering feat may largely be attributable to tire formulations having vastly improved between 1990 and 2008.

I learned of the Ford Transit Sportvan, a confusingly diesel sporty? version of the Ford Transit!

Hell, I learned about a small 20s brand I didn't even know existed!

I find out new things about cars every week, and that's not every day just because most days I run out of time to read and listen and browse all the car-related content I would want to (hence me writing this at 2:30AM, cough cough). Every model has an intricate story usually originating years before its birth, thousands of parts, usually dozens of variations year over year, mountains of media created around it and thousands of examples that have gone around to be featured in movies, owned by celebrities, and participate in history in other thousands of minuscule little ways. Multiply this for thousands of models worldwide and then multiply that for a century and a half. However narrow your area of interest, if you think you know as much as most of the car trivia within it you are absolutely a fool.

Oh wait you were probably asking for an actually fun fact.

Oops.

Well, still today, I learned that our dear Saturn Vue, remember our dear Saturn Vue? Well, not @makenoplans's, the second generation, it turns out that 1. at fucking least it drove well and 2. it died along with Saturn itself when GM went bankrupt and a clause stipulated for the government bailout was to kill three of its brands - Saturn being one of their least successful at the time I WONDER FUCKING WHY I WONDER IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ONE COULD HAVE DONE TO SAVE IT LIKE NOT EVISCERATING ALL LIFE OUT OF IT AND TURN ITS CORPSE INTO AN AMERICAN DISTRIBUTOR FOR A MEDIOCRE GERMAN CAR BRAND i am calm i am calm i am digressing. Well they'd relatively speaking just started making the second gen Vue in Mexico and they were like aw cmon do we really have to stop selling it so soon? And so they just fucking. Used the "Chevrolet Captiva Sport" branding it was sold with in South America to sell it to rental companies. It's basically like a fake ID but it's no faker than the one you started off with.

Oh! And a bit less recently I found out that bafflingly you could get the first generation Honda Civic with three different trunk doors - seen here in increasing order of price and sense.

Originaire d'Asie (en particulier de l'est de l'Inde et du Bangladesh), la blatte germanique s'est propagée à travers la planète par deux routes dans des directions opposées, selon une nouvelle étude publiée dans la revue Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences qui a analysé des échantillons d'ADN provenant de 281 spécimens de 17 pays.

  Parmi les 4 500 espèces de cafards, la blatte germanique est la plus répandue sur la quasi-totalité de la planète.

  Pourquoi germaniques ?

Après avoir déchiffré leur origine, qui n'est pas liée à l'Allemagne, la question est de savoir pourquoi elles ont reçu ce surnom.

  Tang affirme qu'elles ont été vues pour la première fois en Europe dans les magasins d'alimentation de l'armée pendant la guerre de Sept Ans (1756-1763).

Chaque partie au conflit appelait ces insectes par le nom de son adversaire : pour les soldats russes, il s'agissait de « blattes prussiennes » (d'après l'ancien État allemand), tandis que les ennemis de la Russie les appelaient « blattes russes ».

  Quelques années plus tard, le biologiste suédois Carl Linneus les a classées et leur a donné pour la première fois le nom de Blatta germanica (Blatta en latin signifie évitant la lumière) et germanica parce que les spécimens qu'il a analysés ont été collectés en Allemagne.

  Il convient également de rappeler que la Suède a participé à la guerre de Sept Ans contre la Prusse.

  Le genre a ensuite été renommé Blattella, pour regrouper des variétés plus petites de blattes."
